Assembly debate on 6 May 1988 (8th Sitting) (see Doc. 5890, motion for an order). Text adopted by the Assembly on 6 May 1988 (8th Sitting).
The Assembly,
1. Deeply concerned at the level of North Sea pollution ;
2. Noting with regret that the results obtained so far through international co-operation have not been conclusive ;
3. Convinced of the potential validity of the various existing agreements and treaties for combating this veritable scourge affecting one of our most important seas ;
4. Hoping that the decisions taken by the latest international conference in London in November 1987 will bear fruit ;
5. Convinced of the need to pay continuous and regular attention to this problem,
6. Instructs its Committee on the Environment, Regional Planning and Local Authorities :
a to review the list of signatures and ratifications of the relevant international conventions and treaties ;
b to assemble information on the observance and application of these texts and their degree of incorporation in national legislation by states which have ratified them ;
c to hold meetings with the chemical and petrochemical industries, agriculture, and maritime transport companies, which are the main polluters of the North Sea ;
d to report back to the Assembly during 1989 on these matters as well as on the implementation of the decisions taken in London.
