The Parliamentary Assembly emphasises the vital role of sports journalism in promoting transparency, accountability, and democratic oversight in the realm of sports, underpinned by freedom of expression and information as guaranteed by Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Addressing challenges such as access restrictions, legal pressures, and gender inequalities, it calls on member States, sports organisations, and media entities to uphold media freedom, strengthen whistleblower protections, and support investigative journalism. Recommendations include ensuring fair access to events, revising regulatory frameworks, and promoting gender equality in sports media. The Assembly also stresses the importance of safeguarding editorial independence against commercial pressures and advocates for collaborative efforts to enhance transparency and accountability in global sports governance, while recognising the unique role of sport in society.
