Moldovan Parliament President: 'Only alongside European, free and truly democratic states can we ensure our security'

The President of the Moldovan Parliament Igor Grosu, welcoming PACE’s Standing Committee to Chisinau, underlined the significance of Moldova taking on the Presidency at a moment of acute geopolitical tension.

“Today, as we take over the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, war has returned to the European continent. European values as we know them are in danger,” he said. “Moldova understands that only alongside European, free and truly democratic states can we ensure the security of our country.”

Mr Grosu affirmed Moldova’s commitment to its new responsibilities: “We will treat the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers with the utmost responsibility, and we will try in this mandate to facilitate the support provided to Ukraine by the Council of Europe. We do not forget that Moldova and the whole of Europe is defended at this moment by Ukraine.”

Reiterating Moldova’s strategic direction, he added: “Moldova is most interested in preserving and strengthening European values and the European Union, because this is where our home is, and this is where we are heading.” He pledged to continue working for “what is the most valuable to us: peace and freedom”.
