PACE and European Parliament: co-ordination of political messages concerning Council of Europe standards

Strasbourg, 07.05.2013 - PACE and the European Parliament must speak with one voice in the fields of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon underlined at the end of his two-day visit to the European Parliament in Brussels, on 6 and 7 May.

“Election observation provides an ideal opportunity for putting this goal into practice. My interlocutors and I have therefore agreed to hold regular consultations through the heads of election observation delegations,” said Jean-Claude Mignon, while pointing out that the same principle of regular exchanges should also apply to the authors of country reports at PACE and the European Parliament. Lastly, the President also called for political messages to be co-ordinated in the context of Euronest and PACE debates on human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

During his visit, the President held meetings with Miguel Martinez, Vice-President of the European Parliament, Elmar Brok, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Milan Cabrnoch, Chair of the Delegation to the EU-Armenia, EU-Azerbaijan and EU-Georgia Parliamentary Co-operation Committees, and Hélène Flautre, Chair of the Delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee.
