14/05/2019 Monitoring
The Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will hold a seminar on 16 May in London on “Media freedom and the functioning of the democratic institutions”.
This seminar will bring together Alastair King-Smith, Co-ordinator for Global Campaign on Media Freedom, Foreign Office; Jamie Angus, Director of BBC World Service Group; Rebecca Vincent, UK Bureau Director of Reporters Without Borders; and Lord George Foulkes (United Kingdom, SOC), PACE General Rapporteur on media freedom and safety of journalists.
In a number of countries, different forms of control and pressure over the variety and content of media hamper their independence and pluralism, which undermines the functioning of democracy. During this seminar, parliamentarians will take stock of media freedom in member States, identify shortcomings and discuss ways to strengthen media independence.
