Council of Europe leaders express ‘deep concern’ for the health of Alexei Navalnyy

Alexey Navalny in prison

The Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs and President of the Committee of Ministers Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly Tiny Kox, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić have issued the following statement:

“We express deep concern about reports that the health of Alexei Navalnyy, incarcerated in Russia for over two years after an attempt on his life by poisoning, is rapidly deteriorating. We are gravely concerned by reports of ill-treatment and cruel detention conditions to which Alexei Navalnyy is subjected and call on Russia to immediately ensure appropriate medical care.

In line with relevant judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, as well as decisions of the Committee of Ministers, we reiterate our calls for the release of Mr Navalnyy without delay and we underline the unconditional obligation of Russia to fully execute all final judgments of the Court.”
