PACE President Mevlüt Cavusoglu today paid tribute to the late leader of the “Velvet Revolution” Vaclav Havel for his vision of a better Europe and his outstanding contribution to the values the Council of Europe stands for: human rights, the rule of law and democracy.“In his speech before PACE on 10 May 1990, Vaclav Havel gave us the key to a new European home: ‘without dreaming of a better Europe we shall never build a better Europe,’ he stressed.

At the end of a three-day official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu today suggested a set of concrete measures to overcome the political stalemate and speed up reforms, on the eve of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 10th anniversary of membership in the Council of Europe in April 2012, and before the Assembly’s debate to be held in January 2012 during PACE’s plenary session.

PACE President, Mevlüt Çavusoglu, today started an official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina (6-8 December). During his visit, he is due to meet members of the Presidency, members of the Collegiums of the House of Representatives and of the House of Peoples, the leaders of the major political parties, as well as representatives of the international and diplomatic community.

During his two-day working visit to the United Kingdom ending today, PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, welcomed the priorities of the UK presidency which hand in hand coincide with the priorities of the Assembly, in particular the emphasis put on the Reform of the Court. He recalled that as stated in PACE Resolution 1726, this process should take into account, the need to strengthen the implementation of Convention rights at the national level;

A 15-member PACE delegation, led by Tomáš Jirsa (Czech Republic, EDG), will visit Morocco from 22 to 26 November 2011 to observe the parliamentary elections on 25 November. The delegation will meet, inter alia, representatives of the parliamentary groups, the Secretary of State at the Ministry of the Interior in charge of election administration, the President of the National Human Rights Council and representatives of civil society, the media and political parties not represented in parliament.

At the end of his working visit to Monaco, in the margins of the Conference on the Council of Europe Strategy for the Rights of the Child 2012-2015, PACE President today met with the Minister of State Michel Roger and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jose Badia. Mr Cavusoglu praised “the commitment of the Monegasque authorities” to the Council of Europe standards and values.

PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu will undertake a working visit to the United Kingdom on 21-23 November 2011, during which he is due to meet the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, the Lord Speaker, the Chair of the House of Lords EU Select Committee, the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Turkey and the Chair of the delegation of the United Kingdom to PACE. Mr Çavuşoğlu will also attend Prime Minister’s question time.
