Senegal: Jean-Claude Mignon congratulates the President-elect

PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon today offered his congratulations to Macky Sall, President-elect of the Republic of Senegal. "I am delighted that the voters of Senegal were able last weekend to express their political will in a calm atmosphere, and that the election result has been accepted by all the candidates," declared the Assembly President.

North-South Prize 2011 to Boris Tadić and Souhayr Belhassen

Boris Tadić (President of the Republic of Serbia) and Souhayr Belhassen (President of the International Federation of Human Rights), are the two North-South Prize 2011 laureates. The Prize will be awarded in Lisbon by the President of the Republic, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, during an official ceremony, notably with Parliamentary Assembly President Jean-Claude Mignon, at the Senate Room of the National Portuguese Assembly, on 27 March (11h00).

PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon is to make an official visit to the Principality of Monaco on 23 and 24 March 2012. On 23 March he is due to meet the President of Monaco’s National Council Jean-Francois Robillon and the heads of political groups in the Council, as well as Minister of State Michel Roger. He will also have an audience with His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Shooting in Toulouse: PACE President condemns a cowardly and despicable act

Following the shooting which took place outside a secondary school in Toulouse, in which four people, including three children, died, PACE President made the following statement: “I am horrified by this cowardly and despicable act which cost the lives of three children and one of their young teachers at a school in Toulouse. Early indications suggest that there could be a direct link with the shootings which claimed the lives of three soldiers last week in Toulouse and Montauban..."

PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon today held talks with the President of the UN General Assembly Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser during a meeting in Strasbourg. Referring to the crisis in Syria and the Arab Spring, the two Presidents underlined the need for stronger dialogue and co-operation between the UN and the Council of Europe, especially when it comes to dealing with international crises.

In a statement to mark International Women’s Day on 8 March, PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon has said there can be no democracy without respect for women’s rights. He launched a message of support and encouragement to all women living in the new democracies emerging from the Arab Spring. “Women, who were on the front line of the uprisings against authoritarian regimes, must also be on the front line when it comes to the running of public institutions, political decision-making, being able to vote and stand for elections,” said Jean-Claude Mignon.
