The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Jean-Claude Mignon, this morning welcomed the international agreement on the establishment of a transitional government in Syria, following the international conference of the Action Group which was held in Geneva yesterday.
"Our Assembly has consistently called for the establishment of a democratic transition in that country, in line with the provisions of Mr Annan's six-point plan. The agreement, supported by all international actors, particularly the permanent members of the Security Council, represents a concrete opportunity to end violence and begin the process," said the President.
"Our Assembly is ready to give political support to the implementation of this agreement and I call on all member states of the Council of Europe to work in this direction, with particular emphasis on the fundamental rights and freedoms as well as on the humanitarian consequences of the crisis," he added.
