The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has adopted a resolution honoring Alexei Navalny, a prominent Russian opposition leader who was killed while imprisoned by the Russian state. Despite the European Court of Human Rights ordering the Russian Federation to release Mr Navalny, he remained incarcerated in inhuman and degrading conditions, subjected to sleep deprivation, lack of access to proper medical care and prolonged solitary confinement that is systemically applied in the Russian Federation. The Assembly condemns Vladimir Putin's totalitarian regime, which has systematically suppressed democracy, engaged in acts of aggression against neighboring countries, and perpetrated human rights abuses, including the torture and ill-treatment of political prisoners. The resolution calls for an independent investigation into Navalny's death, the release of political prisoners, and the reinforcement of sanctions against Russia to counter its ongoing war against democracy. It emphasizes the need for international cooperation to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations and to support democratic forces in Russia and Belarus.
