Marietta Karamanli: faced with ‘growing destabilisation of the world order’, values-based organisations must work together

“Faced with the growing destabilisation of the world order, organisations based on universal values, such as the Council of Europe and the United Nations, must increase contacts at all levels, intensify co-operation and support each other in order to strengthen the multilateral system," said Marietta Karamanli (France, SOC), Chair of PACE’s Sub-committee on External Relations, speaking at the end of a three-day visit by the sub-committee to the UN in New York (11-13 November 2024).

"Parliamentarians who are in direct contact with citizens have a vital role to play in these efforts. Our visit contributes directly to this objective. The discussions that the members of the sub-committee held with UN representatives and diplomats from Council of Europe member countries were very much appreciated by both sides. We need to go further and look for new opportunities for co-operation, including in the field and in our parliaments, drawing more on our respective experience and expertise,” she underlined.

During the visit, sub-committee members met with leading UN officials dealing with human rights, peace operations, economic development, policy formulation, counter-terrorism and legal affairs, as well as diplomats from France, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom.
