The Assembly
Considering that the Icelandic fisheries dispute impairs the unity of Member States;
Considering that the positions of the Governments concerned have recently become rigid and that perhaps European Members of Parliament could exercise a moderating influence and suggest the main line of a compromise acceptable to all concerned;
Recalling the part played by the Assembly in bringing about an acceptable solution of the Saar question;
Convinced that disputes among Member States of the Council of Europe should, if possible, be solved within the European family circle,
Decides to use its best endeavours to try to bring about a settlement of the Icelandic fisheries dispute and accordingly instructs the Political Committee to bring together a group of Icelandic and United Kingdom Members of Parliament, as well as members from other member countries, with a view to finding together, as soon as possible, an amicable arrangement which might be accepted by the Governments concerned.
