Some of the priorities for the education systems of the different member countries of the Council of Europe are to guarantee the right to education, to promote equity and to comply with the different curricula of compulsory and optional subjects and areas. Working on key competences, improving motivating learning methodologies, advancing in educational innovation through the introduction of diverse technologies are some of the most important concerns in education nowadays.
However, insufficient attention is often paid to other priorities that are part of education and the integral training of students, such as the value of socialisation at school. Learning to coexist with other students, from different contexts and environments, respecting and tolerating different attitudes that arise from coexistence, co-educating as a natural educational process with boys and girls of the other sex are examples of situations that derive from socialisation. Learning and growing up together in order to promote effective equality are also part of a life-long learning process that is necessary for maturity.
Besides, the growing impact of the information society, the spread of new technologies, the massive use of mobiles, social networks, video games, etc., have great educational benefits, but at the same time generate new problems to which the educational system must adapt.
Today, a growing concern in schools is the way children and young people relate to each other. Socialisation is necessary in the educational process, not only because of the need for affectivity, contact, communication and relationship with peers of the same age, but also as a fundamental element to implement learning procedures, such as collaborative learning, project-based learning and other active methodologies.
Therefore, the Parliamentary Assembly urges the Council of Europe to assist member countries to draw up recommendations and common lines on educational socialisation and its consequences on the teaching-learning process and on the well-being of pupils.
