Since its inception tlie Special Committee on Agriculture has had as one of its primary aims the study of the organisation of European agricultural markets.
Recommendation 8, which it had presented to the Assembly, was adopted at the Sitting of 1st December, 1951.
Now that the preparatory work is finished, the Committee has considered it its duty to draw the attention of the Assembly to the urgent need for setting up an organisation capable of fostering the development of the agricultural economy, in harmony with industrial development.
At its meeting of 26th May, 1954, the Special Committee on Agriculture adopted the attached draft Resolution by unanimous vote of the; Members present, with-one abstention.
The Assembly,
Desirous of continuing its contribution towards the achievement of organised agricultural markets ;
Anxious to see a suitable balance established between European industry and agriculture, the first of which is rapidly expanding whereas,the second is still under-developed and lacking in modern equipment ;
Convinced that planned agricultural production and expansion, paying due regard to the needs of Europe, would raise the standard of living of the working people ;
In pursuance of the task which it originally conferred upon its Special Committee on Agriculture and in accordance with its Recommendation 8 (1951),
Urges the Governments to lose no time in organising European agricultural markets by setting up a Specialised Authority with limited but real powers.
