Status of women in the southern Mediterranean: visits by the PACE rapporteur

Strasbourg, 14.02.2012 - Fatiha Saïdi (Belgium, SOC), a member of the Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), will make a fact-finding visit to Casablanca and Rabat (15-18 February), followed by Tunis (19-21 February), in connection with the preparation of her report on "Gender equality and the status of women in the Council of Europe southern neighbourhood".

After participating in a debate on "The different faces of immigration: Moroccans worldwide in the new Constitution" on the occasion of the Casablanca book fair, Ms Saïdi will have meetings in Rabat with Saad-Eddine El Othmani, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Bassima Hakkaoui, Minister for Solidarity, Women, Family and Social Development (to be confirmed), as well as with members of the House of Counsellors and representatives of civil society and human rights bodies.

In Tunis meetings are scheduled with National Constituent Assembly Speaker, Ben Jaafar (to be confirmed), and other Constituent Assembly members and with Sihem Badi, Minister for Women's Affairs, as well as with representatives of civil society, international organisations, human rights bodies and the media.
