25/04/2013 Session
Strasbourg, 25.04.2013 – Much more needs to be done in the spirit of international co-operation and burden-sharing by the EU and its member States to assist the countries beyond their eastern borders to deal with migratory pressures, according to PACE.
The resolution adopted today, on the basis of a report by Andrea Rigoni (Italy, ALDE), says that Turkey is under particular pressure, but that the growth in mixed migration flows is also affecting the countries of the Balkans, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Russia. These countries are increasingly in the position of having to take responsibility for persons who want to enter the EU, but cannot do so.
The Assembly also called on countries beyond the EU’s eastern border to enhance intra-regional and cross-regional co-operation and to improve their capacity to deal with asylum claims.
