Call on the Turkish authorities to guarantee judicial independence and impartiality

On the basis of the preliminary findings of Josette Durrieu (France, SOC), rapporteur for post-monitoring dialogue with Turkey, the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) Monitoring Committee yesterday adopted a statement in which it stresses that it has been following events in Turkey since 17 December 2013 with concern.

It calls on the Turkish authorities to guarantee judicial independence and impartiality in the context of the ongoing reforms and their implementation in practice.

The Monitoring Committee invites the authorities to co-operate with the Council of Europe, in particular its Venice Commission, to ensure their future legislation's consistency with European standards.

While awaiting a constitutional reform which must provide the required clarifications and guarantee the separation and balance of powers, the committee has decided to follow developments in Turkey and to come back to these matters at its next meeting if the circumstances so warrant.
