At a meeting in Strasbourg, Blanca Alcalá, the Mexican Senator elected President of the Latin American Parliament (Parlatino) on 16 May last, and Wojciech Sawicki, PACE Secretary General, stressed the similarities between the two parliamentary assemblies in terms of their structure, functioning and political priorities. They expressed the wish to develop co-operation between the two assemblies through representation at their respective parliamentary sessions and inviting the committee chairpersons or rapporteurs working on questions of common interest to attend each others’ sessions.
The Parlatino is a parliamentary assembly which comprises parliamentary delegations from 23 Latin American countries, and with which the Parliamentary Assembly concluded a co-operation agreement in December 2008. It works to promote the principles of parliamentary democracy, peace, human rights, international law and regional co-operation.
