PACE has given its backing to online dispute resolution (ODR), as well as other innovative uses of information technology, as a way of improving individuals’ access to justice.
Approving a report by Jord Xuclà (Spain, ALDE) today in Sofia, the Assembly’s Standing Committee said IT tools could speed up and simplify judicial proceedings. Voluntary online dispute resolution could resolve disputes “more speedily, cheaply, and in a less conflictual manner” than conventional litigation, the parliamentarians said in a resolution.
However, they added that there should also be safeguards on issues such as privacy, equality of access to online resources and enforcement of any decisions reached.
