"The threat of terrorism is ever present in our countries. It would be a grave mistake to try to play the fight against terrorism off against human rights protection and suggest that one should be chosen over the other," said Harlem Désir, French Secretary of State for European Affairs, addressing PACE today.
"Our duty is to pursue both: to fight against terrorism with the utmost determination, using all necessary means, but always with the weaponry of the law, with respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms," he added.
"That is why the measures taken in France under the state of emergency adapt our legislation to provide a lasting guarantee for the security and freedoms of citizens and defend our values, our model of society and democracy," he emphasised.
