“Spain is and will remain a reliable and predictable member of the Council of Europe,” said the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, when addressing PACE today.
“The world and Europe are better off now than they were 70 years ago. European citizens feel safer, freer and more secure in their rights. However, we are far from reaching perfection yet. To get closer to it, it is vital to respect the values and principles upheld by the Council of Europe,” said the Minister.
“As history has shown us, overlooking these values and principles can cause the emergence of the monsters that Goya painted in his time. To prevent this, the reason of law and the law of reason must be ever vigilant. If we follow this line, dialogue, reconciliation and co-existence are always possible,” said Mr Garcia Margallo.
