The Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination, meeting in Malta, has proposed a set of measures to prevent and combat gender discrimination and gender-based violence in healthcare, medical research and clinical trials.

The committee notes that access to healthcare remains unequal and that gender discrimination in health is prevalent across European countries. It deplores the existence of specific discrimination against LGBTI persons in healthcare settings. According to the report by Camilla Fabricius (Denmark, SOC) adopted by the committee on 11 September, such a discrimination “leads to misdiagnosis and delays in treatment”.

The draft resolution adopted calls on member states, in particular, to “mainstream gender in health policies”. States should also “draft and fund national action plans for women's health, with a focus on preventing gender discrimination in healthcare” and on LGBTI health strategies. In addition, the committee called on states to “ensure the accessibility, quality and adequate funding of sexual and reproductive health services”.
