23/06/2011 Session
UK Attorney General Dominic Grieve today affirmed that the UK government will use its upcoming chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers from November this year to pursue reforms in the Council of Europe and Court of Human Rights.
Speaking during a debate on parliaments and human rights, he said that national parliaments were key to ensuring that human rights flourished, but that governments must listen to the people for whom the human rights convention was created.
He welcomed moves for reform of the Court of Human Rights and backed proposals that would shift the emphasis of dealing with human rights issues to national level, solving the growing problem of over-load in the court system.
