PACE monitor to visit Poland

Warsaw / Poland

Azadeh Rojhan (Sweden, SOC), co-rapporteur for the honouring of membership obligations to the Council of Europe by Poland, is to make a fact-finding visit to the country from 18-20 November to look at recent judicial reforms, polarisation and the functioning of the country’s system of checks and balances, and the suspension of the right to asylum, among other issues.

Poland is one of ten countries currently subject to the full monitoring procedure of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which aims to help them fulfil their promises to uphold the highest democratic and human rights standards.

In Warsaw, Ms Rojhan is due to meet the Deputy Justice Minister, the Presidents of the Supreme Court, members of the National Councils of Public Prosecutors and the Judiciary, among others, as well as representatives of different political groups in parliament.

The Assembly’s monitoring procedure involves regular visits by rapporteurs, who conduct an ongoing dialogue with authorities, and occasional plenary debates to ensure that a state's progress and problems are honestly assessed. The next plenary debate on the monitoring of Poland is due in the second half of 2025.
